Dance Myths That Hurt More Than Help

There are so many false ideas we believe about dance—and some can seriously hurt a one’s confidence and mental health. So, let’s clear up a few of these misconceptions and shift the narrative.

  1. The best dancers are always in the front of the formation

Totally false. Formations are built for all kinds of reasons—talent, height, aesthetics, or even random choice. And don’t underestimate the dancers in the back—they often grab the audience’s attention just as much as others in the front. Placement doesn’t define your worth as a dancer- it’s constantly changing, so don’t get discouraged or overly hyped based on where you’re standing.

2. The best dancers always give flawless performances

Not true. A dancer can win first overall with a performance they didn’t feel good about. And yes, even “good” dancers have off days. One performance doesn’t define your skill or potential—so don’t let it define your mindset. There are no perfect dancers—just dancers.

3.  Costumes make or break a routine

Nope. While a costume can help you feel more confident, it’s not what determines your placement at competitions. Judges look at performance, technique, and execution—not sequins and rhinestones. A costume isn’t a valid excuse for a routine not doing as well as planned.

4. A judge’s bias controls everything

Bias exists, but it’s not everything. Well-known dancers might get more attention, but new talent gets discovered all the time. Judges might have preferences towards certain styles, but they’re also trained to spot talent. Don’t chalk up every loss to bias—but don’t take every setback personally, either. It’s a balance.

5. You have to stand in the front during class to be seen.

Not necessarily. If you learn better up front, go for it. But standing in the back can actually give you space to experiment, play with musicality, and focus on absorbing the choreography. Visibility doesn’t always equal growth—sometimes the back of the room is where breakthroughs happen. It’s about what works for you.

Let go of these myths and focus on what really matters: growth and joy on your dance journey (with DanceVibes, of course!)
