The Ideal Summer for a Dancer

Summer is a weird time for dancers—school’s out, nationals wrap up comp season, and studios often close for break. Some dancers feel guilty for resting, while others want to train but can’t find opportunities—or burn out trying.

So what’s the ideal summer? It depends, but here are some ideas to help you rest, recharge, and still stay connected to dance.

1. Find New Opportunities

Summer is a chance to step away from the routine of weekly classes and rehearsals. Most dancers hit burnout not from boredom, but from doing the same routines for months. Try something different to reignite your love for dance:

2. Take Care of Your Body

During the school year, it's hard to balance dance, academics, social life, and health. Use summer to reset:

  • Focus on personal projects (dance or non-dance)

  • Stretch and work out consistently—use the DanceVibes Habit Tracker to build the habit

  • Catch up on sleep after long comp weekends

3. Actually Relax

The rest of the year is packed with rehearsals, comps, and early mornings. Now’s your chance to slow down:

  • Sleep in

  • Tan, eat what you love, and enjoy free time

  • Let yourself rest—without guilt

4. Take a Social Media Detox

Comp season fuels comparison: Who’s training harder? Who’s winning more? Summer is your time to unplug:

  • Scroll less, live more

  • Post less, compare less

  • Focus on what you want (More on this in our comparison blog post)

Summary

Summer is your season. Rest, dance, be creative—do what feels right for you, not anyone else.
